Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, Senior Research Associate, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI)

Dr. Abhijit Sarkar is a Senior Research Associate in the Division of Data & Analytics at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, where he leads the computer vision and machine learning group. His research centers on applying computer vision, machine learning, and time series analysis to improve transportation safety and mobility. His recent work spans a broad range of topics, including autonomous system perception, sensor fusion, driver distraction, data de-identification, cardiac biometrics, human psychophysiology, vehicle safety, and naturalistic driving data analysis. As Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Sarkar has led research projects totaling over $18 million in funding. These efforts have been supported by agencies such as NHTSA, FHWA, NSF, FMCSA, Safe-D UTC, NASA, NCHRP, and various private sponsors. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, a master’s degree from IIT Kharagpur.
